ichard H. Collins firmly believes that for Americans to achieve their full economic potential, they must have access to a quality education.

To that end, Collins has formed two innovative, education-related programs as part of The Today Foundation which he oversees.

The Children's Education Fund works to ensure economically disadvantaged kids can obtain a sterling education nevertheless. It does this by:
  • providing scholarships that allow parents to send their kids to the private school of their choice
  • encouraging the creation of high-quality charter schools

Meanwhile, the foundation's EdTech program enhances the reading skills of children throughout America and:

  • provides an assessment that measures student knowledge with their abilities
  • continually assesses student performance
  • adapts its curriculum to individual learning needs
  • helps teachers spend more time in the classroom
  • notifies teachers of students' weaknesses in a particular skill

"Quality education has been the cornerstone of every great society in history," Collins says. "Through these programs, we are striving to ensure the next generation of Americans will possess the skills necessary to effectively compete in the global marketplace."

In 2008, the Collins Academy opened in Jefferson, Texas, to serve the many needs of the area. These include:

  • Winnovators was created by Texas Railroad Commissioner Chairman Michael Williams to teach math, science and technology to East Texas students ages 11 to 18. The program teaches these concepts by building video games and is expending to Dallas in 2009 and throughout the state in 2010.
  • The Academy is working with Panola College to help area adults get their high school diplomas.
  • Computer Mastery is being taught to adults who have never learned to operate a computer.
  • The Academy is working with Panola College to teach area residents to become nurses and healing professionals.
  • Jefferson Riverfront and Nature Center is being developed with the City of Jefferson and the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers. It is an environmental park of native trees, plants and wildlife located along the Big Cypress River in downtown Jefferson. It will open in 2012.
